ITRC statistics 24 Jun 2009 |
This page with info and software for the HP ITRC forum members, gathered and compiled by H.Merijn (BR41967 - procura) can be found on www.cmve.net, kindly provided by Clemens van Everdingen, www.hpux.ws kindly provided by Steven E. Protter, and on perl.org kindly provided by the nice people at perl.org, who take donations here. Now that the site has grown to a whopping 5.6 Gb, 1000+ files, and a throughput of over 75 Gb each month on average, I should be extremely grateful for the space and bandwidth provided by these nice people.
When bookmarking this site, please use the perl.org link, since it has a much higher bandwidth available than the other three.
I'll just keep it to these pages, and hope it will suffice. Though I notice that the main page gets longer and longer. I have split it into sections and pages already, but might split up more in the near future. Please ask questions through the forum.
All communications about this place please through the ITRC forum, so we all can learn.
PerlFor those that are not (yet) comfortable with Perl, Wendy van Dijk has put up a nice article on use.perl.org titled "Where and how to start learning Perl".
Here are binary perl distributions for versions 5.8.0 through 5.8.8 prepared for Oracle (meaning that you should be able to build DBD::Oracle using this perl, but that it is not included in these builds) built with GNU gcc. HP C-ANSI-C builds on request, but you should be able to do these yourself.
As by accidental mistake, I have built all 5.8.7
and 5.8.8 distributions with -DPERL_DONT_CREATE_GVSV. This can cause a
binary incompatibility (but is was said by insiders that the chance on
that is actually close to zero), and also may cause some modules to misbehave.
A report was sent, that proved that e.g. the module version
does not behave correctly. I apologize for any inconvenience caused by
this, and have put new 5.8.8 build up that not suffer this flaw.
Choose carefully.

There's no guarantee I didn't throw in one or two other useful modules that are not listed. And some modules might not be buildable in 64bit perl for whatever reason. You'll have to find out yourself. One way to see what is included in the build is:
# /opt/perl/bin/perldoc perllocal
If there proves to be need for extra modules that sometimes prove hard to be built, like Tk, I might add them here.
To install it, do something similar to:
# cd /opt # bzip2 -d </tmp/perl-5.8.3-gcc-3.3.2-11.00-elf64-ora.tbz | tar xvf -
And add /opt/perl64/bin to your $PATH,
preferably in /etc/PATH, but be sure to put it
before /usr/contrib/bin, where old
perls might live.
Medio March 2005, I started experimenting with converting my distributions to software depots, the way HP's porting center ships them. The first effort has lead to a deport that contains perl-5.8.6-dor for HP-UX 11.00 both the 32bit and the 64bit build. In a depot, you can force the destination folder, and swinstall registers the installed software, which has obviously some advantages. To install it, use something similar to:
# swinstall -s /tmp/perl-5.8.8-dor-11.00.sd perl
which will install both 32bit perl (/opt/perl) and 64bit perl (/opt/perl64), but it still won't alter /etc/PATH, for reason that I can't predict which version you are going to use by default. If you prefer to install only one of the two versions:
# swinstall -s /tmp/perl-5.10.0-11.23-ipf.sd perl.perl5-32 # swinstall -s /tmp/perl-5.10.0-11.23-ipf.sd perl.perl5-64
Since there is no need for the files to be of any specific user, I did
not set it to a specific user ID. Just for housekeeping, you might want to
consider 'chown -R root:sys /opt/perl*' after installation.
GNU gccThe binaries available from here should serve as a start point only!
It is highly recommended to rebuild your own gcc from scratch using the versions available from here, because GNU gcc will create new include files from the ones available on your system, likely not to be the same as they are on mine.
All gcc's available below include recent binutils and gdb, except for HP-UX 11.23 which is unsupported for gdb, as gdb's configure shows:
ia64*-**-hpux*)
# No gdb or ld support yet.
noconfigdirs="$noconfigdirs ${libgcj} readline mmalloc libgui itcl gdb ld"
;;
Newer versions for gcc and/or binutils might be added here when they are released. I only make gcc's available for which the installation enabled me to build and test the most recent perl without errors.
For the PA-RISC architecture (HP-UX 11.00 and HP-UX 11.11 (11i),
32bit and 64bit objects do not mix. Period. This means that
you need a separate GNU gcc compilers to generate 32bit code and 64bit code.
For both it is advisable to pass the -mpa-risc-2-0 flag.
On Itanium, one compiler is capable of generating both 32bit objects,
which is the default, or 64bit objects, using the -mlp64 compiler
command line option.
The 3.4.3 version of gcc available in the download section includes binutils 2.15 and gdb-6.2.1. I know that by the time I uploaded the builds gdb-6.3 was already out, but I'm having trouble building recent gdb's in 64bit mode so I postpone those to later, where I either replace the current builds or include it in the next gcc builds.
The 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 versions of gcc available in the download section includes binutils 2.16.1 and gdb-6.3.
The 4.0.3 versions of gcc available in the download section includes binutils 2.16.1 (the 64bit tree has snapshot 20060311) and gdb-6.4.
The 4.1.0 version of gcc available in the download section includes binutils 2.16.1 and gdb-6.4.
I have trouble using GNU gcc 4.0.x in 64bit mode on development version of Perl on HP-UX 11i (11.11), and I'd advice you to install 3.4.5 if you are about to use 64bit and/or threads. GNU gcc version 4.0.3 does not show these problems, and should be safe.
GNU gcc 4.1.0 does NOT build out of the box in 64bit more on PA-RISC. The gcc folk blame binutils. Under investigation. When you want to walk that road, you need a cvs snapshot of binutils, and not use GNU ld.
Install it like this:
# cd /usr/local # bzip2 -d < /var/tmp/gcc-4.0.1-64-11.00-elf64.tbz | tar xf -
or from the depot:
# bzip2 -d /tmp/gcc-4.0.2-11.11.sd.bz # swinstall -s /tmp/gcc-4.0.2-11.11.sd gcc
And add /usr/local/pa20_64/bin to your $PATH,
preferably in /etc/PATH.
When your gcc starts complaining about size_t, you have
probably installed a 11.00 build on a 11i machine. Choosing the correct
build is your key to success.
Here is an example for building gcc-3.4/64 on HP-UX 11.11 using gcc-3.3.3
64bit available below, installed on /usr/local/pa20_64 and GNU
utilities (like make, flex, and bison) available on
/usr/local/gnu/bin. Modify the latter to where these can be found. Extract
the source tarball to something that will look like gcc-3.4-20030820, and
then link 'ln -s gcc-3.4-20030820 src' to enable below:
#!/usr/bin/sh
export CONFIG_SITE=
export CC="gcc -mpa-risc-2-0"
export PATH=.:/usr/local/pa20_64/bin:/usr/local/gnu/bin
export PATH=$PATH"":/usr/bin:/opt/ansic/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/opt/langtools/bin
export PATH=$PATH"":/opt/imake/bin
rm -rf obj
mkdir obj
cd obj
../src/configure \
--enable-languages=c,c++ \
--prefix=/usr/local/pa20_64 --with-local-prefix=/usr/local/pa20_64 \
--with-gnu-as --with-as=/usr/local/pa20_64/bin/as \
--with-gnu-ld --with-ld=/usr/local/pa20_64/bin/ld \
--disable-shared \
--disable-nls \
--host=hppa64-hp-hpux11.11
make bootstrap-lean
make install
Will configure the latest source for
hppa64-hp-hpux11.11 using gcc-3.3.3 and builds it. make install
will overwrite the port made available from here. Get the shell snippets that
I use to build gcc here for 10.20 (32 bit
only), 11.00, or
11.11.
All versions will be installed under /usr/local. To build
gcc you will need at least bison and flex.
ITRC forum statistics posted on the forum usually got truncated, here are the full versions, these are generated with a bunch of Perl scripts. I have tried to explain the numbers here.
Alex Lavrov has created a website where above stats are more interactive. He also has put the throughput statistics (clock on every last digit of the year in the table above to see my graphs) in a barchart. This might be how we, as ITRC users, perceive the forum availability and response time.
And I've collected some stats from three sites, which shows that I'm fulfilling the need of at least a few people with these pages ☺
The fastest mirror now provides me statistics on a daily basis by e-mail.
Beepz hasn't been accessible for ages, so I removed the links.

All builds and ports are developed locally on the machines available:
All using both the latest available HP C-ANSI-C compiler and/or the GNU gcc C compiler installed (probably a very recent port).
As our last customer is now upgraded to 11.00, the 10.20 machine is about to be upgraded to 11i, leaving me no machine to run 10.20 anymore. Urgent calls have to hurry.
Don't worry about existing stuff. I will not remove what's already here.
