Merijn's HP-UX software for ITRC members

Please use perl.org for perl/gcc downloads!

  Latest updates → 2019-04-26 perl-5.28.2 builds are now available
→ 2018-09-18 openssl-1.0.2o for HP-UX 11.31
→ 2018-01-22 wget-1.19.3 for HP-UX 11.31 and 11.23

This page with info and software for the HP-UX Forum users, gathered and compiled by H.Merijn (procura) can be found on www.hpux.ws kindly provided by Steven E. Protter, perl.org kindly provided by the nice people at perl.org, who take donations here, nluug.nl kindly provided by the Dutch Unix User Group, and on my own site here.
Now that the site has grown to a whopping 13 Gb, 1500+ files, and a throughput of about 72 Gb each month on average, we should be extremely grateful for the space and bandwidth provided by these nice people.

Special thanks go out to Clemens van Everdingen who kindly provided the space and bandwith for the primary mirror for the first 15 years. Very much appreciated!

When bookmarking this site, please use either the perl.org link or the nluug.nl link, since these have a much higher bandwidth available than the other four.

I'll just keep it to these pages, and hope it will suffice. Though I notice that the main page gets longer and longer. I have split it into sections and pages already, but might split up more in the near future. Please ask questions on the forum as others will then also read the solutions given. My own mail address can be found at the bottom of this page.

Introductions to Perl

For those that are not (yet) comfortable with Perl, Wendy van Dijk has put up a nice article on use.perl.org titled "Where and how to start learning Perl".

Learning perl can also be made easy by using tutorials. These can be found on http://perl-tutorial.org/.

Distributions

Here are binary perl distributions for versions 5.8.0 through 5.22.0 prepared for Oracle (meaning that you should be able to build DBD::Oracle using this perl, but that it is not included in these builds) built with GNU gcc. HP C-ANSI-C builds on request, but you should be able to do these yourself. There are also statistics on perl downloads.

As by accidental mistake, I have built all 5.8.7 and 5.8.8 distributions with -DPERL_DONT_CREATE_GVSV. This can cause a binary incompatibility (but is was said by insiders that the chance on that is actually close to zero), and also may cause some modules to misbehave. A report was sent, that proved that e.g. the module version does not behave correctly. I apologize for any inconvenience caused by this, and have put new 5.8.8 build up that not suffer this flaw. Choose carefully.

Limited install of OpenSSL modules in HP-UX 10.20 depot. I am probably running into system resource limits (only 512 Mb available on my box). If someone has the "trace" package for 10.20 still available, I'd like to get it and dig deeper. None of the SSL that I did ship actually passed the tests.

Jarkko Hietaniemi also runs a site for CPAN with the links to perl binaries for HP and other Operating Systems.

My builds are different from the default HP distribution. I've included a different set of (IMHO) useful modules (versions might vary across the different builds). Some of these come as default in the CORE set of modules, others are fetched from CPAN. The versions mentioned in the table are just a guide of where I started choosing modules to include. The actual versions included are the versions that are current at the moment I release:

There's no guarantee I didn't throw in one or two other useful modules that are not listed. And some modules might not be buildable in 64bit perl for whatever reason. You'll have to find out yourself. One way to see what is included in the build is:

  # export PATH=/opt/perl64/bin:$PATH
  # perldoc perllocal

To see the actual installed version of a module (if available):

  # perl -MV=Some::Module
  # perl -MV=Tk,Text::CSV_XS

If there proves to be need for extra modules that sometimes prove hard to be built, like Tk, I might add them here.

Installation

Install from compressed archives

To install it, do something similar to:

  # cd /opt
  # bzip2 -d </tmp/perl-5.8.3-gcc-3.3.2-11.00-elf64-ora.tbz | tar xvf -

And add /opt/perl64/bin to your $PATH, preferably in /etc/PATH, but be sure to put it before /usr/contrib/bin, where old perls might live.

Install from Software Depots

As of medio March 2005, I ship my distributions as software depots the way HP's porting center ships them. The depot will contain both the 32bit and the 64bit build if the architecture supports both. In a depot, you can force the destination folder, and swinstall registers the installed software, which has obviously some advantages. To install it, use something similar to:

  # bzip2 -d /tmp/perl-5.24.0-11.31.sd.bz
  # swinstall -s /tmp/perl-5.24.0-11.31.sd perl

which will install both 32bit perl (in /opt/perl32) and 64bit perl (in /opt/perl64), but it will not alter /etc/PATH as I cannot predict which version you are going to use by default. If you prefer to install only one of the two versions:

  # swinstall -s /tmp/perl-5.24.0-11.31.sd perl.perl5-32
  # swinstall -s /tmp/perl-5.24.0-11.31.sd perl.perl5-64

Since there is no need for the files to be of any specific user, I did not set it to a specific user ID. Just for housekeeping, you might want to consider 'chown -R root:sys /opt/perl*' after installation.

Installing or updating modules from CPAN

Installing modules is most easily done using cpan, the command line interface to CPAN:

  # cpan Moose Text::CSV_XS

Will install Moose (including all its dependencies in the correct order), and update Text::CSV_XS. Note that in order to install XS modules, you will need the matching C compiler installed.

Statistics

ITRC Statistics

ITRC forum statistics ended on 22 June 2011 as the forum moved to an inferior new passport controlled site.

Site statistics

And I've collected some stats from the mirrors, which shows that I'm fulfilling the need of at least a few people with these pages ☺

The develooper mirror provided me statistics on a daily basis by e-mail up to early Nov 2013. A reorganization disabled statistics.

Beepz hasn't been accessible for ages, so I removed the links.

As throughput of most sites is up so high nowadays that logs tend to grow beyond what the providers are willing to analyse for individual users, the download stats are not updated as of May 2015.

Development

All builds and ports are developed locally on the machines available:

All using both the latest available HP C-ANSI-C compiler and/or the GNU gcc C compiler installed (probably a relative recent port).

As our last pre-11.23 customers are now upgrading to 11.31 or Linux, the 10.20 and 11.00 machines are just used for tests and porting. When they die, they won't be fixed or replaced. Urgent calls have to hurry. The same might happen to the 11.11 machine once there are no customers left to service from it.

Don't worry about existing stuff. I will not remove what's already here. But when bitrot breaks existing downloads, I won't be able to replace them.

The Download section has moved to a separate page.
